Audubon North Carolina biologist Aimee Tomcho joined the Orange Water And Sewer Authority’s (OWASA) Community Open House at the Cane Creek Reservoir for a bird walk October 21.

Tomcho joined the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, who offered information about fisheries management and wildlife, and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, who offered information about water, boating and marine safety. 

Cane Creek Reservoir is an eBird hotspot that boasts sightings of nearly 200 bird species generated from approximately 800 checklists. Recent bird sightings recorded include Bufflehead, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, and an Eastern Phoebe.

Audubon North Carolina is working with OWASA to implement bird-centric forest management practices on their Buckhorn Game Land property in Orange County, NC. With a total area of 500 acres, Buckhorn is one of North Carolina’s smallest game lands. When our local New Hope Audubon Society chapter conducted spring and winter bird counts at the site in 2016, the result reflected a good diversity of birds, including one of Audubon’s named Atlantic Flyway Priority species-- the Brown-headed Nuthatch-- as well as nine climate-threatened birds, including the White-breasted Nuthatch!

New Hope Audubon Society occasionally leads bird walks on Buckhorn Game Land, and thanks to their help, we've determined the bird species count totals 55 for this bird conservation site.
