A Season of Success for Beach Nesting Birds

Each year, North Carolina’s beaches attract thousands of beach goers enjoying the sand and surf, along with thousands of birds that depend on those same beaches to nest and protect their young.

Sharing our seas and shores isn’t just a motto on the coast; it’s an action plan for significant conservation work that benefits birds and people. This summer, Audubon was fortunate to have 54 amazing volunteers of the Beach Bird Steward program who have spent the season working to engage and educate beach goers to Wrightsville Beach on the importance of protecting our beach-nesting birds.

A Season of Success:

Throughout 2013, volunteer beach stewards donated more than 1,100 hours of their time as ambassadors, spreading their knowledge and love of birds to beach goers, and educating them on beach bird habits, habitats and how to help protect the many species that make North Carolina beaches their nurseries. Equipped with their binoculars, stewards took to the beaches and successfully introduced thousands of people to a new world concealed in the sand, inspiring bird conservation for many!

Meet our coastal staff and a few of our feathered friends in a special video highlighting the extremely important work of our volunteers, and how the program is impacting a community for birds and people.
