Governor Perdue’s historic veto of S 820 is to be commended.  The Governor cited the General Assembly’s unwillingness to ensure the adequate protections for drinking water, landowners, county and municipal governments, and the health and safety of families are in place before fracking begins.

Governor Perdue said, "Our drinking water and the health and safety of North Carolina’s families are too important; we can’t put them in jeopardy by rushing to allow fracking without proper safeguards."

Shale gas development has the potential to broadly affect our ecosystems in North Carolina.  These ecosystems, which provide productive habitat for birds are at great risk of habitat loss and fragmentation from unconventional gas development. The effects will persist for decades, and the cumulative result will be landscape-level consequences for vulnerable forest birds.
