Frank Ripp is a great supporter of Audubon North Carolina and has shared these fantastic photos of a Great Crested Flycatcher family in a birdhouse in his yard. Frank also shared this story. Do you have a great bird story to share? Contact us!
Our Great Crested Flycatchers are all gone for another year. Once the babies fledge, they all take off, but as you know, come back each year to the "same" old birdhouse ... have been doing it for at least 10 years. Always a treat to see them each year for about 2 months.
We did have trouble fighting off the crows this year. A crow had one of the parents clutched to the top of the birdhouse & plucking feathers. Fortunately, I saw it and scared the crow enough so that it loosened its grip and the flycatcher got away! Then I had to put a small baffle over the top of the birdhouse because the crow kept coming back and pulling out nesting material to get at the chicks!
