34 members of the Audubon Society of Forsyth County visited the Pine Island Sanctuary and Audubon Center on January 14-16. The group weathered cold temperatures and wind, but were rewarded with some great birding at several Important Bird Areas: Pine Island, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, and Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge.
The group had the unique opportunity of taking a tram tour of impoundment areas that are closed to the public at Mattamuskeet NWR. The group was able to observe tens of thousands of ducks, swans and snow geese.
