UPDATED: TogetherGreen Volunteer Opportunities

Supporters across North Carolina are invited to participate in one of the following TogetherGreen volunteer projects happening across our state. These opportunities are part of over 200 TogetherGreen volunteer events occurring in dozens of cities across the country over the next year. Audubon and Toyota launched the TogetherGreen initiative in 2008 to help community-based organizations significantly expand their volunteer base and to foster diverse environmental leadership and fund innovative conservation ideas.

Local residents are invited to be a part of this community effort to conserve North Carolina’s natural resources and create healthy spaces for area wildlife and people.

We want your photos, videos and stories from these events! Post them to the Audubon NC Facebook page.

MOUNTAIN VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Elk Knob Survey Volunteer Day - Participants get a tote-bag for coming to training, a rite in the rain notebook for keeping their observations, then a t-shirt for visiting on their own!

We have a research permit to do all taxa inventory at Elk Knob and New River State Parks this year and we have had our first training and had four folks come hike some of the new tracts recently purchased by the park that include one of our Golden-winged Warbler study sites.  These tracts include large open areas that have not been surveyed for the park yet so we are adding lots of species to the Elk Knob inventory. We also have some funding for equipment and so will be installing a trail side camera, some live traps for a variety of taxa, as well as other cool things.

Volunteers are asked to come to a training on a set date then can visit on their own as their schedules allow.   You don’t have to be an expert in any particular group but obviously folks who can ID plants, insects, mushrooms, and other groups are encouraged to come help for a day or more.   A camera is helpful to document things you find.

Where sturdy waterproof shoes if you have them.  There are some creek crossings and other wet areas and there are no real trails here.

  • Where: Elk Knob State Park - We will meet at the entrance to the park and car pool to our site to start the hike.  For directions to Elk Knob visit www.ncbirdingtrail.org and follow the links to the mountain trail then Watauga site descriptions.
  • When: Monday, October 22 at 8:00 am
