Energy
In recent years, there has been an increased emphasis on alternative fuel sources. Audubon North Carolina applauds this focus on conservation and reducing the overall carbon footprint. At the same time, these alternative strategies, especially woody biomass, wind, hydrofracturing and solar, must be implemented in ways that respect the habitats, flyways and needs of birds and other wildlife.
Session law 2007-397, more commonly referred to as Senate Bill 3, created a renewable energy and energy efficiency portfolio (REP) standard for North Carolina. The purposes of the portfolio standard as outlined in the session law are to diversify energy resources, encourage private investment in renewable energy and improve air quality.
ANC supports the implementation of the North Carolina Energy Policy, especially its emphasis on conservation, efficiency and development of renewable sources of energy. Audubon is also opposed to any effort to repeal the state’s REP.
As these alternative energy projects have advanced in North Carolina, Audubon has been working with developers, community groups, local authorities and federal agencies to provide advice and input. Our efforts are geared toward providing guidance and public comments on the proposed projects so that their effects on birds can be mitigated before work ever begins.
Our partners at the local, state and federal levels have been helpful in these efforts.
