Audubon North Carolina Holds Statewide Contest For Bird Conservation

Residents Are Asked to Invite Carl the Traveling Cardinal to Settle Down in Their Town To Help Protect Birds Across NC

With the help of a small, plush Cardinal traveling the state through social media, Audubon North Carolina has increased membership of the Cardinal Club, a monthly giving program designed to raise money for statewide bird conservation. For two years, Audubon has used its mascot, Carl the Traveling Cardinal, to excite supporters in their mission and raise awareness for the Cardinal Club monthly giving program.

Now in it’s third year, Carl the Cardinal is putting away his suitcase and choosing one city in North Carolina to call home. To choose the city where he and his mate Caroline will nest and rest, Audubon is holding a social media contest asking fans to vote for their city.

From the mountains to the coast, city officials, media personalities and local residents, are being asked to submit photos and videos inviting Carl to call their city home. Entries will be featured on Audubon’s Facebook page where fans are asked to vote for their favorite. The city with the most ‘Likes’ will become Carl and Caroline’s forever home and be featured by Audubon NC.

“Carl’s travels have been a fun and creative way for Audubon to connect with our supporters, and we are excited to close his journey with a statewide effort to find a new home,” says Karen Fernandez, Director of Development and Communications. “Members of the Cardinal Club help us help our birds, and we would love to see as many citizens as possible invite Carl to their cities.”

The Cardinal Club, Audubon’s monthly giving program, raises funds to support conservation efforts protecting birds in North Carolina. Our birds are facing a changing climate, habitat destruction and countless other obstacles. Through initiatives such as Bird-Friendly Communities, the Important Bird Areas program, and many others, Audubon’s work has been vital to protecting NC’s birds.

Carl’s journey will be shared on the Audubon NC blog, where people can follow along as pictures and commentary are posted of Carl’s travels to spread the word about the Cardinal Club.

The deadline to submit an invitation for Carl and Caroline to settle down in your city is Sunday, November 30. Facebook voting will begin Wednesday, December 3. Click here for more information.
