Thousands of nesting Royal and Sandwich Terns, Brown Pelicans, and Laughing Gulls greeted members of the media when they recently visited one of Audubon North Carolina's coastal sanctuaries. The sanctuary is a protected dredge island that provides critical nesting habitat for birds that have been squeezed out of their historical nesting grounds. The island is closed to people in order to protect these fragile birds but Audubon biologists and the US Army Corps of Engineers invited the media on a boat trip to share images of the island with the public. Audubon NC and the Corps work together to manage these dredge islands to provide suitable habitat for the nesting birds. Thanks to the journalists for their great reports, which you can enjoy below: |
