    Anne Brown joined the staff of Audubon North Carolina in June of 2008. Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, she attended Smith College and University of California at Berkeley, where she studied philosophy and religion and participated in the civil rights, women's rights, peace and environmental movements.



  • Mark Buckler

    Position: Center Director | Read Full Profile

    Mark Buckler is the director of the first Audubon center in North Carolina: Pine Island Sanctuary and Center on the Outer Banks. For the past twenty years, Mark has been involved in wildlife field research and education in the coastal environments of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and the Outer Banks. Most recently, he served the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission as the Program Director of the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education, just north of Pine Island. In that role, he helped launch the new center which attracts more than 200,000 visitors a year.



  • Chris Canfield

    Position: Executive Director | Read Full Profile

    Chris Canfield was named Executive Director of the North Carolina State Office in January 2000 after working as the office's Director of Development. He joined Audubon after more than 6 years with UNC-Chapel Hill where he worked as Director of Development for the Ackland Art Museum and Director of Communications for UNC's business school. A former air force officer, Chris worked at the Pentagon as a liaison with national news media.



  • Karen Fernandez

    Position: Karen Fernandez, Director of Development | Read Full Profile

    Karen joined Audubon NC in October 2006. She has extensive training and experience in all aspects of fundraising. Most recently, she has been a campaign consultant with the Episcopal Church Foundation, providing feasibility study services to more than a dozen churches nationwide. Previously, Karen directed fundraising for a start-up alternative healing center in the Catskills of New York, raising more than $1.3 million to purchase, renovate, and program an historic 98-acre home site.



  • Walker Golder

    Position: Deputy Director | Read Full Profile

    A native of the North Carolina coast, Walker grew up exploring the marshes, tidal creeks, and beaches near his home on Wrightsville Beach. He developed a keen interest in waterbirds and shorebirds as a student of Dr. James F. Parnell and served as Warden for Audubon's Battery Island Sanctuary from 1986-89. After completing a Masters of Science degree in Marine Biology at UNC-Wilmington, Walker was hired by National Audubon as the first manager of the newly-created North Carolina Coastal Islands Sanctuary program.



  • Nicole Loft

    Position: Biological Technician | Read Full Profile

    A graduate of UNC-Wilmington with a B.S. in Marine Biology, Nicole has five years of experience as a professional biologist conducting fieldwork in North Carolina. After completing her academic training at UNC-W, Nicole worked with the North Carolina Coastal Federation on ecological restoration projects and assisting developers with environmental compliance. She came to Audubon North Carolina as a biological technician in 2005 when she monitored a bird sanctuary on Lea-Hutaff Island. She then worked as a project scientist with a local consulting firm.



  • Sidney Maddock

    Position: Field Technician | Read Full Profile

    Sidney Maddock is Audubon’s Field Technician on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Originally trained as an attorney, he now focuses his efforts on the conservation of shorebirds and colonial waterbirds. Sid’s work includes the management of Audubon’s sanctuary islands near Ocracoke Inlet, where American Oystercatchers, Common Terns, Least Terns, and Brown Pelicans nest. He is involved in Audubon's effort to work with the National Park Service in its ongoing management of shorebirds and colonial waterbirds at Cape Hatteras National Seashore.



  • Angela Mangiameli

    Position: Conservation Biologist | Read Full Profile

    Angela joined Audubon North Carolina in January 2007. She grew up in Texas where she received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from The University of Texas at Arlington. Her dedication to the conservation of wildlife, particularly birds, led her to pursue a Masters of Science in Wildlife Management from Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas, where she studied wading bird behavior and habitat use. After graduating in May 2006 she spent her time over the summer and fall as a research technician working with Crested Caracaras in Florida.



  • Adriane Michaelis

    Adriane started working for Audubon North Carolina in April 2007. A Michigan native, she received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and then took a year off from school to intern at Mote Marine Lab in Sarasota, Florida. She came to Wilmington, North Carolina in 2006 to pursue her master's degree in Marine Biology. She is currently wrapping up her Masters' thesis on the “Winter Foraging Ecology of Sharp-tailed Sparrows in Southeastern North Carolina.”



  • Ida Phillips

    Position: Director of Communications | Read Full Profile

    Ida has worked as a conservation communicator for almost 20 years. She worked for The Nature Conservancy from 1989-2000, reaching the level of Director of Communications for the North Carolina Chapter. From 2000-2007 she ran a writing and consulting business that focused on nonprofit environmental and educational clients. In 2005 she co-founded a multimedia publishing and consulting firm, Niche Publishing. Her clients included Duke Forest, Furman University, US Fish and Wildlife Service, NC Division of Parks and Recreation, and NC Coastal Land Trust.



  • Margaret Scott

    A North Carolina native, Margaret grew up in Rockingham County. After graduating from UNC-Greensboro with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, she embarked on a 31-year career at the UNC Health Care System in Chapel Hill where she worked as a systems analyst and department manager. From childhood, Margaret has always had a sense of concern and caring for plants and animals. From her travels worldwide, she expanded her understanding of many ecosystems and the importance of their preservation.



  • Curtis Smalling

    Position: Curtis Smalling, Mountain Region Biologist and NC IBA Coordinator | Read Full Profile

    Curtis Smalling began keeping bird lists in elementary school. In high school, he was an active member of the Grandfather Mountain Audubon Society. He’s been going gangbusters ever since. Good thing, because for the last three seasons, Curtis has used his birding skills to survey Golden-winged Warblers (a WatchList species) in the NC mountains for Audubon as part of Cornell’s Golden-winged Warbler Atlas Project. "Curtis has conducted the most thorough and complete surveys in many years for the species and has found significant populations," says Deputy Director, Walker Golder.



  • Andy Wood

    Position: Education Director | Read Full Profile

    Andy Wood began working for Audubon North Carolina in October 2000. Prior to his post with Audubon, he served for 13 years as the Education Curator for the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Andy earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife and Fishery Science from Texas A&M University in 1981.
